It looks like the edge of a washcloth to me.
I'd like to say cauliflower if it weren't magnified, which fits with your kitchen theme. Perhaps it is white pepper?
Dude, these are gorgeous pics. You need to release a book! I'd love to see these in hi-resolution color, on semi-gloss paper.
